Peggy R. Rose

Peggy offers twenty-five years of professional equine management and training experience, eleven of those working as Stable and Kennel Manager/Trainer at The Farm owned by Oprah Winfrey.  In these years she has created, managed, and maintained stables, including their planning, purchasing horses, equipment, tack, creation of arenas, and choosing feed sources and service providers.  She was responsible for the training of the horses for riders of varying levels of ability, in varying disciplines, as well as for the riding instruction.  She has run a successful breeding operation with up to 5 stallions and numerous broodmares, including outside breedings.  She has maintained the files and records for all the livestock, prepared reports on expenses, and given regular written updates on health and training for all the animals under her care.  Peggy has experience with hiring and supervising stable assistants, outside contractors, veterinarians, and farriers.  She has also overseen the hay production and pasture management.

For the last six years, Peggy has managed and organized training clinics for international level trainer at a local stable.  This included the set up of the location, advertisement, registration, and management for clinics with up to 26 participants with horses and up to 100 auditors.

Peggy has experience in training horses for the general public, Class A and Dressage Shows, as well as riding lessons for show preparation.

Her most important asset is that she is a perpetual student of horsemanship and all things related.  She regularly attends training clinics with Ray Hunt, Walter Zettl, Buck Brannaman, Bryan Neubert, and Joe Wolter.  She has attended the Blue Grass Laminitis Symposium in Louisville, KY twice, and the The International Hoof Care Summit in Cincinnati, OH  to further her understanding of lameness and hoof problems, and attended Oklahoma Horseshoeing School to be certified in basic farrier work and understanding of equine limbs and hooves.  She attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, and has graduated from both the Indiana Real Estate Sales and Broker’s Courses and passed the state licencing exam for both.

Dr. Maureen Fehrs, D.V.M.

Maureen has been involved with horses since childhood and has had experience with their use in numerous equine activities including jumping, polo, showing, endurance competitions, competitive trail, and breeding.  Her love of equines lead her to attaining her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Cornell, a Masters Degree in Animal Nutrition from Michigan State University, and her Doctrate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia, graduating with honors.  She has over 20 years of experience in equine practice encompassing the gamut from reproduction, racetrack work, show stock, to backyard and pleasure horses.  She has worked with hundreds of stables in formulating rations and designing exercise schedules for both competition and injury recovery.

Maureen is currently highly involved in judging endurance and competitive trail competitions.  She has judged numerous events in New York, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan, including the National Competitive Trail Competition three times.  She is a sought after speaker for presentations on nutrition, conditioning, and preventive medicine.  She also teaches at clinics to introduce and prepare new comers to the sports of Endurance Riding and Competitive Trail. She is extremely interested in exercise physiology and maintaining the health of equine athletes in many disciplines, attending continuing education seminars regularly concerning these areas of study as well as all aspects of equine medicine.  She has published several papers on animal nutrition.

Maureen still finds time to enjoy her own horses and the study of natural horsemanship.

I can offer a strong recommendation for the abilities of Peggy Rose and what she can offer in terms of equine stable planning and management. The experience and organizational abilities she brought to The Farm created a safe and healthy environment that not only kept the horses comfortable and stress free, but also brought greater enjoyment of the stable and its inhabitants to all who came to ride and interact with the horses. In the eleven years I worked with Peggy, I could plan with confidence that the horses would be safe and prepared for myself and my friends to enjoy. She selected and trained our group of horses to be able to offer a great experience to any level of rider and for most any use we might require. I believe her abilities will bring a very positive influence to the planning and management of any equine endeavor.

I had been struggling with the layout for my hobby farm for several years.  My husband and I raise sheep and keep 4 head of horses and I needed additional fencing to facilitate rotational grazing.  I was limited to the area south and east of the house, and uncertain how to proceed with the fencing.  We had a modest budget for the project and were especially concerned about safe traffic flow of animals and vehicles.  Peggy and Maureen figured out the best way to use an existing pole barn and still stay within the property constraints.  They really jump-started the fencing project that had been put off due to indecision about where to put gates, etc. I would highly recommend them for any type of fence or barn design.

As one can imagine, managing a 25 stall barn in the middle of a large metropolitan city, training horses to police large demonstrations and getting them used to situations (such as helicopters, traffic and loud noises) which they’ll encounter on a daily basis can be a challenging task.

During the second week of April 2005, Peggy Rose and Dr. Maureen Fehrs completed an overall study of our horse facility located in Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC.

In a very short time after incorporating Peggy and Maureen’s suggestions regarding issues such as training, nutrition and saddle fit, our horses showed a dramatic improvement in temperament and general health (improved coat, hooves, etc.)

In addition, after taking their advice to better our ventilation system, outdoor paddock, and stall bedding, our horses’ environment has been greatly enhanced.

In sum, because of the stressful demands we place on our houses, it is imperative that they receive the best training, nutrition and stable care.  And thanks to Stable Environments, they now do!
